CABRERA A HERO IN ARGENTINA, SAYS
84-year-old ROBERTO DE VICENZO

Roberto de Vicenzo, winner of the Open at Royal Liverpool in 1967, was the last Argentine golfer to win a major tournament before Angel Cabrera pulled off his shock win at Oakmont on Sunday in the United States Open.
De Vicenzo, who is now 84, says he watched every minute ot the championship on television at his home in Argentina.
"Cabrera is now a hero in Argentina,'' he said. "He's my hero. I'm very happy for him, because I didn't want to leave this world before I saw something like this.''
"The biggest different is that when Angel won the US Open, many more people saw it on television,'' De Vicenzo said. "When I won the British Open 40 years ago not as many saw it. Millions saw Cabrera win.''
One other slight difference is that when Roberto won the Open, it was a three-day championship, finishing with two rounds on the Friday.
Cabrera competes on the European Tour. De Vicenzo made a special trip from Argentina to compete at Hoylake 40 years ago.
Cabrera was welcomed by thousands of his fellow countrymen during a motorcade from the airport to his home in Argentina earlier this week.
With the flag of Argentina over his shoulders, Cabrera held the US Open championship trophy above his head during the drive with a police escort at Villa Allende in the central province of Cordoba.
Cabrera was joined by his two sons in the motorcade to his home, not far from where he first learned to golf as a caddie at a local club.
