CELTIC PRO TOUR PRESS RELEASE

GAVIN McNEIL WINS CELTIC PRO TOUR EVENT
IN IRELAND WITH COURSE-RECORD 66

The first Celtic Pro Tour event to be staged in Ireland took place at Seafield Golf and Country Club in Wexford this week and was won by Waterford’s Gavin McNeill, who walked away with the Wexford Open title.
The Celtic Pro Tour has developed out of the Welsh-based Dragon Tour, Wales’ first professional golf tour, which started last season. The Irish events on the tour are staged under the Shamrock Tour brand (www.shamrocktour.com)
McNeill shot a brilliant four-under-par round of 66 in the second round to set a course record at the Seafield resort and win by two clear strokes at two-under-par 138.
Runner-up was Jason Law from East Cork. He finished level par 140. McNeill pocketed the £1,000 cheque (1,400 euro) with Law winning £500 (700 euro).
Third place went to Welsh golfer Tom Davies (Machynys Peninsula) on 142. He won £250 (350 euro) in the process, which puts him into second place in the current Celtic Pro Tour Order of Merit.
Fellow Welshman Alun Evans (Newport Links) was a further three shots back at 145 in fourth position. He won £150 (210 euro), which also catapults him up the Order of Merit to third place.
EuroPro Tour golfer Alex Smith currently leads the Order of Merit but was not able to travel to Ireland for the event.
Leading amateur was James Fox (Portmarnock) on 146. He won the £50 (70 euro) voucher, with Patrick Geraghty (Seafield) a further two shots back at 148 winning the last of the prize money - £100 (140 euro) for fifth place professional.

The Celtic Pro Tour will stage 15 events this season, with 11 in Wales, two in Scotland and two in Ireland. The next Irish event, the Wicklow Open, is at Tulfarris on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th July.

“We were delighted with the welcome we received from Seafield Golf and Country Club and with the way the Irish professionals supported our first event in Ireland”, said Rhydian Thomas, Celtic Pro Tour Director. “The Dragon Tour in Wales was set up last season because professionals felt there was a gap in the market, and its success gave us the incentive to push on and support golfers in Ireland and Scotland also. The sole purpose of the Celtic Pro Tour is to act as the leading developmental tour for the Celtic nations.”

Roger Maliphant, Event Organiser, added: “We were really pleased to see the two Welsh golfers travel over to compete, and also Kevin Goude, an amateur from Cambridge. We hope to see more Irish golfers in our Welsh-based events too. Our ultimate aim is a 24 event season from April to October, which will incorporate eight events in each of the three countries, and following the success of the Seafield event this week, we have already received offers from clubs to host events in 2008.”

The next Celtic Pro Tour event, takes place in Wales next week. The Carmarthen Bay Open takes place at Machynys Peninsula, next Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th June. Entry costs £99 for professionals, with £50 temporary membership, and £55 for amateurs. Membership of the tour is priced at £175. For more information, visit the website at www.celticpro.com.
