SALTMAN COMPLETES WONDER
FOUR-TIMER WITH IRISH
WIN INCLUDING RECORD 66

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Amateur golf's man of the moment Lloyd Saltman completed a spectacular fourth win in a row in 72-hole open tournaments in horrible conditions over the Royal Dublin course at Bull Island today.
He had a roller-coaster final day before winning the Irish men's amateur open stroke-play championship with a three-over-par total of 291.
Over the past five weeks, the 21-year-old Walker Cup and Open silver medallist star from Craigielaw had won the Scottish champion of champions' tournament at Leven, then the Craigmillar Park Open at Edinburgh followed by the "big one" of the Lytham Trophy last weekend.
He won them all by making every post a winning one. In the Irish championship, Lloyd showed he could come from behind to win.
He climbed out of 18th position in the pack in the third round on Sunday morning in awful weather with a simply magnificent round of six-under-par 66, three under the new record set by fellow-Scot Ross Kellett in Saturday's second round.
That hoisted Lloyd two shots clear of the field and then it was a case of holding on to what he had as the weather closed in once again. A four-over-par 76 in the final round was good enough for him to win the prestigious title by two shots.
Lloyd was in fact six-over-par for the first nine holes of his fourth round but, Saltman being the class, in-form player he is, dug deep to come home in two-under par in very difficult conditions. He birdied the 11th, got an eagle at the par-5 14th and then a clinching birdie at the 17th.
The Lytham Trophy victory pushed Saltman up to seventh place in the R&A world amateur rankings. This latest win could put the Scot even nearer the No 1 spot held by Royal Aberdeen's Richie Ramsay for so long last year.
Richard Kilpatrick (Banbridge) finished runner-up after also recording a final round of 76 which too featured two birdies and an eagle on the closing nine but bogeys on the two closing holes ended the Ulsterman’s title hopes.
A closing 71 propelled East of Scotland Open champion Keir McNicoll from Carnoustie to third place on 296, two strokes ahead Belfast wonder boy Rory McIlroy and Pedro Figueiredo (Portugal).
US amateur champion Richie Ramsay looked as if he might repeat his victory in this event of two years ago when he shared the lead after 36 holes.
But Richie toiled to a 79 and 77 on Sunday for a final total of 301 - the same as former Scottish match-play champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie). They finished joint 12th.
