GEORGE MURRAY LEADS SCOTS ON
CHALLENGE TOUR IN ITALY

By MICHAEL GIBBONS, Challenge Tour Press Officer

John E Morgan, the epileptic golfer who befriended Tiger Woods and caught the imagination of the American golfing public, continued his rehabilitation by moving into contention at the European Challenge Tour’s Tessali-Metaponto Open di Puglia e Basilicata today.
The 29 year old from Bristol is just three strokes off the lead, held by England’s Van Phillips, on Italy’s south east coast, while George Murray leads the Scottish charge on three under par.
It was in 2003 that Morgan held full playing rights for The European Tour (which he won through the 2002 Challenge Tour) and the US PGA Tour.
Morgan (pictured above) headed for America to fulfil his golfing ambitions, and came tantalisingly close to completing the dream only to be derailed by the most violent of epileptic seizures that resulted in a ruptured sternum and four smashed ribs.
That fit happened days after Morgan had lost a play-off for the John Deere Classic, but instead of building on that fantastic result, he saw his career crumble and came home to be closer to family and friends.
Morgan made a comeback last year, but he was once more struck down by a series of horrendous seizures this past winter, which have forced him to start over again.
While Morgan was crafting his 67 at Riva dei Tessali, Murray led the Challenge Tour Scots at the par 72 Metaponto Golf Club. Each player in the field will play a round on each course before playing the final two rounds at Tessali.
It was a mixed day for the other Scots in the field. Jamie McLeary joined Murray at Metaponto and moved to two under, while Eric Ramsay was the best of the Scots on show at Tessali after a level par 71.
Scott Henderson carded a two over 73 at the same venue, while Andrew McArthur and Graham Gordon had a day to forget with a pair of 78s.
