Day 4 Scottish boys' match-play championship at Dunbar
TAKES "GOLIATH"
MICHAEL STEWART
TO 20th HOLE
First and second seeds James Byrne from Banchory and Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), the only survivors of the eight seeds in the first-round draw, claimed their places in the last 16 of the Scottish boys' match-play championship at Dunbar Golf Club today.
No tie at this level is "easy" as such but Byrne seemed to have few worries in chalking up a 5 and 4 fourth-round win over Jack Bradley from Paisley.
It was a different story for his Scotland international team-mate Michael Stewart (pictured right), who was taken to the 20th hole before winning against little-known David Law from the Hazlehead municipal course in Aberdeen.

Stewart was one up after seven and two up after both 11 and 14 holes. But the Boy David hung on in there to be only one down on the 18th tee. He won the last hole to take the tie into extra holes, of which two were necessary before Stewart prevailed. Michael now plays Highlander Michael Campbell from Buckpool for a place in the quarter-finals.
James Byrne - a semi-finalist 12 months ago in this championship - plays Andrew Campbell (Dumbarton) who also won by 5 and 4 against Gary Meechan (Dullatur).
North hope Ryan Elder (Nairn Dunbar) continued his run of good form with a two-hole win over Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) from south of the Border.
Simon Taylor, the 16-year-old junior champion of Bavaria and son of Dundee-born professional Richard Taylor at Nuremberg Golf Club, won his tie by 2 and 1 over Darryn Grant (Renfrew) after being pulled back to all square after 14 holes.
The good run by North Berwick professional David Huish's son Oliver is over. He went down by 3 and 2 to Paul Shields (Kirkhill), winner of the first SGU Junior Tour event a couple of weeks back.
