US WOMEN'S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

FOG WIPES OUT THURSDAY PLAY

Not a blow was struck on the official opening day of the 61st United States Women's Open at Newport Country Club, Rhode Island.

Thick fog which reduced the visibility beyond the safety margin for play to be possible means that the first round was not started until Friday - and there will be a 36-hole programme on Sunday with the qualifiers playing the third and fourth rounds on the same day.
