SCOTLAND YOUTHS TEAM NAMED

HENRY, SALTMAN HEAD SQUAD OF SIX FOR SPAIN

Scottish men's amateur stroke-play  champion Scott Henry headlines a strong Scotland side to defend the European youths team championship in Spain from July 11 to 15.

The 19- year- old, who had to retire after only eight holes in the Scottish youths championship last Friday at Mortonhall, secured his first senior title at Craigielaw at the beginning of the month to underline his reputation as one of the country’s hottest young golfing talents.

Joining Henry in the side is Walker Cup star Lloyd Saltman, who was a member of the victorious Scotland youths side in Ireland in 2004. The 20 year old from Craigielaw impressed last year, clinching a unique double on the Old Course, St Andrews – winning the Links Trophy and securing the Silver Medal in the Open Championship.

The Scotland team, also includes Steven McEwan (Kilmarnock Barassie) who led at halfway of the Scottish youths championship at the weekend and won the Scottish boys' open stroke-play title last year.

Former British boys champion Jordan Findlay is one of two American university students in the team of six. Findlay from Fraserburgh has completed one year of a four-year golf scholarship at East Tennessee State University.

Russell Knox (Inverness) had a great season for Jacksonville University, Florida and was ranked No 10 in the Golf Stat Cup ratings at the end of the 2005-2006 US college season.

Team captain, and former Walker Cup star Barclay Howard is confident that his side can mount a serious challenge. He said: “We have a strong team with a number of extremely talented individuals. More importantly though, they are able to perform well as part of a team.

“I have been lucky enough to be part of winning side in the Walker Cup and I know what a great experience it can be to share success as a team.

“I am keen to pass on this experience and help the boys perform well in Spain and emulate Scotland’s success in the event two years ago.

“I know they will be focused and determined to play to the best of their ability. Let’s just hope that their best will be good enough to win the title.”

.A total of 17 teams will line up for the five-day championship to be played at La Canada Golf Club, Spain.

Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh)

Scott Henry (Cardross)

Russell Knox (Inverness)
