Scot wins PGA senior pro championship
Lockie says he's retiring at top after
first career major victory
BILL LOCKIE hailed his ‘first career major’ after a stunning victory in the PGA Senior Professional Championship at Northants County Golf Club.
The 60-year-old Scot nailed a monstrous 75-foot eagle putt on the final hole to land the crown by one shot aftera final round 68.
The North Gailes professional has been two off the pace at the start of the final day and looked out of contention after shooting 36 on the front nine.
But a dazzling 32 – including the eagle - on the way in gave him victory over local Mike Gallagher and Donald Stirling, as well as a cheque for £4,750.
"I was just thinking 'don't do anything silly,'" Lockie revealed ahead of the putt
"I learnt a lot from Bill McColl's putt which was in a similar place and I saw it slow up. I couldn't believe it when it dropped."
Lockie continued: "This is a wonderful end to my career - I'm not going to play much tournament golf after this. This is my career major. It's my first British title. I lost a play-off here in 2003 and thought my chance had gone. To do this at 60 is wonderful."
Stirling was disappointed to lose out but revealed he would be back next year to try and reclaim his crown."It was a good competition and I've had four top-four finishes so I can't complain. Congratulations to Bill."
The leading 20 players qualified for the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship at De Vere Slaley Hall in August, while the top four also qualified for theWeston Homes PGA International Seniors at Stoke by Nayland in September.
