Stewart only seed to reach quarter-finals at Dunbar

TITLE FAVOURITE BYRNE
TOPPLED BY DUMBARTON'S
CAMPBELL IN ROUND FIVE

No 1 seed and title favourite James Byrne from Banchory was unexpectedly toppled in this afternoon's fifth-round matches of the Scottish boys' match-play championship at Dunbar Golf Club.
Byrne, pictured right, lost by one hole to Andrew Campbell (Dumbarton) who jumped into a two-hole lead after seven holes and maintained a one-hole lead through the 11th and 14th until the tie was all square on the 18th tee.
Campbell won the last hole and the match and will now play Paul Ferrier (Baberton) in Friday morning's quarter-finals.
Ferrier had a good 6 and 5 win over Ryan Elder from Nairn Dunbar. Ferrie was two up after seven and four up after 11.
FATHER A PRO IN GERMANY
Simon Taylor, whose father Richard is the Nuremberg Golf Club pro, is looking more and more a title candidate with every round. Simon reached the last eight with a one-hole win over Thomas Sharkey (Helensburgh).
Taylor started well and was three up after seven and still three up after 11 holes. Sharkey came back at him to cut the lead to one with one to play. Taylor, 16, the junior champion of Bavaria, was able to halve the 18th for victory.
Jeff O'Malley (Newbattle) beat Paul Shields (Kirkhill) with surprising ease - 7 and 6. Shields had been putting together some good performances but met his match in this one.
Shields now plays Scott Clark (Ayr Belleisle) who was a 2 and 1 winner over Chris Cox (Falkirk). Clark led by two holes through the seventh, 11th and 18th.
Clark now plays William Bremner (Edzell), a 3 and 2 winner over David Currie (Sanquhar). Bremner led by two holes after seven and 11 holes and by four after 14.
Bremner is bound for Illinois in the autumn to take up a golf scholarship at John A Logan College.
No 2 seed Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) - the only seed left in the championship - won by 5 and 5 over Michael Campbell (Buckpool). Stewart took a four-hole stranglehold on the tie after only seven holes.
Stewart's quarter-final opponent will be Fraser McKenna (Balmore) who beat Chris Gaittens (Fortrose & Rosemarkie) by two holes Gaittens had the edge on the outward nine holes but McKenna had squared matters by the 11th and was one up after 14 and 17 holes.
