MURRAY JOINT FOURTH IN IRISH OPEN AMATEUR

LEFT-HANDED FINN BEATS IRISH TEENAGER IN PLAY-OFF

Fifer George Murray, beaten in a play-off for the Lytham Trophy the previous Sunday,  finished a creditable joint fourth in a high-scoring AIB Irish men’s open amateur stroke-play golf championship over the testing Portmarnock links at the weekend.

Murray put rounds of 75, 71, 76 and 73 together for a seven-over-par aggregate of 295.

The course was so tough in the weather conditions that the CSS (against a par of 72) for the first three rounds was 74, 75, 77.

Finnish left-hander Antti Ahokas tied with rising Irish star, 17-year-old Rory McIlroy from Holywood, Belfast on 291. Ahokas shot 71, 71, 76 and 73 to McIlroy’s 73, 71, 74 and 73.

Then the Finn beat McIlroy in a three-hole aggregate play-off which seemed to take forever to complete.

Ahokas played for Minnesota University on the American college circuit up to a few months ago and recently was a member of the winning European team over Asia Pacific in the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy at Auckland

McIlroy is the current Irish closed amateur champion.

Five of the 10 Scottish entries survived the halfway cut and three of them finished in the top 10. Apart from Murray, Paul O’Hara (Colville Park) and Scott Jamieson (Cathkin Braes) shared eighth place on 297.

Bryan Fotheringham (Forres) tied for 20th place on 302 which included a third-round 80.

Jonathan King (Glasgow), the fifth Scot to beat the cut, totalled 305.
