MURRAY LEADING SCOT, FOUR OFF PACE

AIB Irish open amateur stroke-play championship

The Scottish challenge was halved from 10 to five players at the 36-hole cut in the AIB Irish open amateur stroke-play golf championship over the testing Portmarnock links.

George Murray from Earlsferry Thistle, Fife, beaten in a play-off for the Lytham Trophy last weekend, still has a chance of going pretty close to another big title.

George is four off the pace after rounds of 75 and 71 for a two-over-par tally of 146.

The other Scots to qualify for the final 36 holes on Sudnay were Bryan Fotheringham (Forres) with 74 and 73 for 147; youngster Paul O’Hara (Colville Park) with a 76 and 73 for 149, the same mark as Jonathan King (Glasgow) with 71 and 78.

Craigmillar Park Open and Edward Trophy winner Scott Jamieson made it through on 150 with 74 and 76.

Finland’s Antti Ahokas and Ulster youths champion Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeboye) lead the field on two-under 142.

The cut fell at 151 and Scott Henry (Cardross) and John Gallagher were one shot outside the mark on 152. Henry scored a pair of 76s while Gallagher went from 74 to 78 in the second round.

The Saltman brothers from Craigielaw are also on the sidelines. Zack the younger had 75 and 80 for 155, one shot more than Elliot with 75 and 81.

Euan McIntosh (Newmachar) was well out of the hunt with 76 and 81 for 157.
