Welshman Davidson beats England's Penge in Spanish final

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Welshman Jack Davidson (Llanwern), the last of the 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages, staged a strong comeback from twice being two down, to beat English teenager Marco Penge by 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final of the Spanish men's amateur international championship at El Saler, Valenciato today.
Davidson beat the No 1 seed, Stirling student Chris Maclean in the first round.
Penge had the better of the first 18 holes and was twice two up before Davidson got one back to be one down at lunch time.
The Welshman quickly wiped out the deficit and took the lead for the first time by winning the 19th and 22nd. A further success at the 23rd put Davidson two up.
Penge kept battling on and reduced Davidson's lead to one hole by winning the short 28th.
But Davidson quickly finish the match after that. He won the 30th to go two up again, the 31st to be three up and the 33rd to clinch a 4 and 3 victory.
