Top 10 finishes by Johnston and Howie in

South Africa

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Two Scots - Liam Johnston (Dumfries and Co) and Craig Howie (Peebles) - finished in the top 10 of the South African men's amateur stroke play championship won today (Fri) at Kingswood Golf Estate by Frenchman Edgar Catherine with an 11-under-par total of 269, two ahead of Ireland's Robin Dawson.
Johnston, joint first-round leader with Catherine, had rounds of 66, 72, 67 and 69 to share fifth place on six-under 274.
Howie shot 70, 71, 70 and 65 for 276 and joint seventh place. He had two eagles on his final card: a 3 at the par-5 third and a 2 at the par-4 13th in halves of 31 and 34.
Kirkhill's Craig Ross made the top 15 with scores of 69, 66, 73 and 71 for 279 and a share of 14th place. A double bogey 6 at the 15th ruined his bid for a top-10 finish.
Scottish U18 boys' match-play champion Jamie Stewart tied for 41st place on 286 with rounds of 70, 74, 73 and 69.
