SCOTLAND HOPES DIE WITH LIAM

JOHNSTON DEFEAT

Scotland's hopes of providing the winner of the South African men's amateur championship for the second year in a row were dashed when its last survivor, Liam Johnston (Dumfries and County) was beaten at the 21st hole in the quarter-finals at Humewood Golf Club, Port Elizabeth today by South African Caylum Boon.
Defending champion Craig Ross (Kirkhill) retired after six holes in his second-round tie against Johnston (pictured) earlier in the tournament. Ross had been sick all night.
Johnson's conqueror Boon will play another South African, 16-year-old Christo Lamprecht, in Friday's final.
