The way they were
1902 and hardly a golf bag in sight: players
carried their clubs in their hands
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Things I learned in the Montrose Mercantile clubhouse yesterday.
There is a picture on the wall of the players in a 1902 match between Brechin Artisans and Montrose Mercantile.
Every single man has on an old fashioned bonnet (well, I consider them old fashioned!) ... but very few have their clubs in golf bags. A lot of the men have their clubs - about eight clubs of so - in their hands in front of them, which suggests that golf bags had not come into fashion by 1902.
