ANGLO-SCOT GEMMA BATTY FINISHES 10TH IN PORTUGAL

Moffat-based Gemma Batty finished the highest British and Irish player in 10th place behind the wire-to-wire leader Letizia Bagnoli (Italy) in the Portuguese women's amateur international golf championship at Montado Golf Resort on the Costa Azul near Lisbon on Saturday.

Bagnoli, who is 624th in the women's world amateur rankings, produced her best ever individual performance with rounds of 67, 73, 72 and 70 for a six-under-par total of 282.

Denmark's Line Toft Hansen was runner-up with rounds of 68, 73, 75 and 69 for 285.

The three players who tied for third place on 286 included Julia Engstrom (Sweden) who, at the age of 15, was the youngest ever winner of the British women's open amateur championship at Dundonald Links last summer.

Gemma Batty is York-born but a Stirling University graduate who lives at Moffat where she is a member of the local golf club.

She had expressed a desire to represent Scotland rather than England and qualifies to do so through her years of residence in this country.

Batty shot 72, 73, 75 and 69 to finish 10th on one-over-par 289.

Chloe Goadby, a member of the St Regulus Club, St Andrews finished T24 on 296 with scores of 73, 74, 74 and 75.

Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam (229) and Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) (232) missed the cut at 228 after three rounds.
