Peter Smith very busy host pro at New Zealand

Open in early March

FROM JIM HARDIE
After the most horrendous week of weather down south, it is a relief to get back to a very windy, but warm Christchurch !
Met up with Peter Smith at Millbrook Golf Club, awesome place but due to close on 100 kph hour winds we only played 9 holes in our visiting group!
Peter is very busy preparing for Millbrook hosting the New Zealand Open in early March
Latest game with Sir Bob Charles was earlier today at Shirley Golf Club
The new build clubhouse is magnificent, as indeed the course continues to be
The photo shoot is John Sanders, ex NZ player, still on 2, Geoff Saunders, playing off 1 as does Sir Bob, with me of course the joe of the group on 6 😎
Sir Bob and myself were partners, playing against John Saunders, an ex-NZ player still with 2 of a handicap and Geoff Saunders, playing off one as does Sir Bob with me, of course, the Joe of the group with 6 of a handicap.

We suffered a birdie barrage, found ourselves 3 down with 7 holes to play, but Sir Bob and I both birdied the 13th, then still 2 down with 2 to play.
I somehow coaxed a 12 footer into the hole for birdie at 17, then the Houdini act was complete, when oh yes the great man birdies the last !
I think I jumped about 20 feet in the air, sheer brilliance !
Of course the banter in the clubhouse was great, celebrated our escape with a couple of glasses of wine, only for me then to have lucky escape number 2 for the day, as on the way back to my apartment, got caught up in a long queue of traffic, thought it was an accident, but oh no, the road was cordoned off, and all drivers were being breathalysed, booze bus New Zealand style !
I was just under the legal limit, so received a sermon about drinking while driving !
Hope all is well in the North-east, we have certainly had the lot weather wise down in New Zealand. It even snowed down south last weekend, and was colder than Inverallachy on a bad alliance day
Thankfully Christchurch is a lot warmer !
Regards
Jim Hardie
