Welshman Boote finishes fourth in South

American men's amateur championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Both the men's and women's titles were won by South Americans in the South American championships, supported by the R and A, at Lima Golf Club, Peru today.
Sofia Garcia (Paraguay) retained the women's title - see report on www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk - and Juan Alvarez (Uruguay) won the men's championship by a shot from American Scott Harvey and Argentina's Matias Simaski.
Welshman David Boote, a student at Stanford University, California, led the field at one time in the 72-hole event but he eventually finished a creditable fourth on 282, four shots behind the winner.
England's young Marco Penge, holder of the Scottish men's open stroke-play title, recovered from an opening round of 77 to finish sixth on 285.
Ireland's Colin Fairweather tied for ninth place on 288.
Scots Barry Hume and Ryan Campbell finished T17 and T24 respectively.
Hume's third-round 78 was the "killer" for the Haggs Castle man who closed with a 71 for four-over 292.
Campbell finished with a 74 for 295.
