Barry Hume comes to grief with a 9 at 17th in

South American third-round 78

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
A 9 at the par-5 17th finally put paid to Barry Hume's hopes of a top-five finish at the South American men's amateur championship, supported by the R and A, at Lima Golf Club, Peru on Saturday.
The Haggs Castle man was there or thereabouts after rounds of 73 and 70 but his third-round 78 included 42 blows for the inward half and his tally of 221 has him T19 alongside compatriot Ryan Campbell going into Sunday's final round.
The Scots are 13 shots behind the leader, Uruguay's Juan Alvarez.
Campbell has had rounds of 75, 73 and 73 for 221.
Best placed Brit is Welshman David Boote, a student at Stanford University, California (Tiger Woods' alma mater).
Boote has scored 68, 70 and 71 for 209 and is only one shot behind Alvarez.
Marco Penge, the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play champion, is the leading Englishman on 214, tied sixth alongside Ireland's Colin Fairweather.
