England made a good start of the three-day Costa Ballena
Quadrangular in Spain by beating Finland 7-2.
England led 2-1 after the foursomes and took the singles 5-1.
In the other match Germany beat hosts Spain 5-4, winning the foursmes 2-1 before drawing the singles 3-3
