North-east Alliance report and scores

Newmachar's John Duff and Chris Lamb

share  home honours with three-under 69s

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Home course men John Duff, now a professional, and +1 amateur Chris Lamb (pictured right) put their local knowledge to good use in today's North-east Alliance over Newmachar Golf Club's
Hawkshill lay-out.
Duff, one of the early starters, posted a three-under-par 69 before 1pm and that score stood unchallenged for the best part of four hours before 21-year-old Lamb joined him at the head of a field of 95.
Lamb felt his ball striking was the best part of his game in halves of 35-34, which included an eagle 2 at the 10th, birdies at the first and ninth and a bogey at the last which cost him outright victory.
"I pushed my drive out to the right and into a bunker at the last and couldn't get the par I needed," said Lamb.
Said Duff, pictured left, who was club champion in 2006:
"I played very nicely. My birdies on 6, 8 and 10 were all due to good approaches. I left my eagle putt on 16 a fraction short after hitting a 4 iron for my 2nd onto the middle of the green. It could have been a very low round if some putts hadnt shaved the edge."
Duff earned £135 in cash, Lamb an amateur prize voucher to the same value.
Ellon amateur Adam Dunton, another late finisher, came third on 70 after getting an eagle 3 at the 16th but a bogey 5 at the penultimate hole.
Challenge Tour player David Law, one of the pre-tournament favourites, finished bogey-bogey-par for a 73. He felt the course was playing much longer than usual because of the wet fairways.
Some of the mid-to-high handicap players found the very wet course, with no run, too long for them off the back tees. This is substantiated by the higher number of scores in the 100s than usual. And there were quite a few No Returns.
