Ireland’s
Shane Lowry moved into contention at the halfway mark of the
WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, firing a four under par second round of 66
to trail runaway leader Jim Furyk by four shots.
Lowry
posted five consecutive threes before the turn, which included birdies
on the sixth, eighth and ninth holes, to surge up the leaderboard, and
he reached five under par with a sixth birdie of the day on the 15th hole, before flying the green on the last hole, which led to his second bogey of the day.
Furyk
also signed for a round of 66 – his second in as many days at Firestone
Country Club – to pull away from the pack on eight under par, with
Bubba Watson (66) and Dustin Johnson (67) sharing second place with
Lowry, four shots off the pace.
Northern
Irishman Graeme McDowell followed his opening round of 66 with a
battling one over par 71 to lie one shot further back on three under
par, in a share of fifth position with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who
posted a round of 69, and New Zealand’s Danny Lee, who birdied the
closing two holes for a round of 72.
Key player quotes
Jim Furyk – 66 (-8 total)
“I’m
happy with back-to-back 66s. Yesterday I felt like I played a really
good round. I got the ball in the hole. I scored. I didn't hit a lot of
fairways yesterday. I missed some greens when I shouldn't have, but I
just managed to make a bunch of birdies. I came out today, I felt a
little better about it. I hit the ball more solid. I hit more fairways,
and had more confidence. I made a couple of loose swings here and there,
I missed a couple putts as well. I think I had some opportunities early
in the round to really get it going and stalled a little bit. Then I
was able to birdie 17 and 18 and 2 to jump start the round and get
3-under pretty quick. So overall, I’m pleased with it. I felt like I was
moving in the right direction today. Hopefully, I'll continue to gain
more confidence in my swing.”
Shane Lowry – 66 (-4 total)
“If
you look at my career so far, I tend to play well on tough courses,
when we have a high winning score. When pars are good and you pick off a
few birdies, I tend to like it. Out here it's all about driving the
golf ball. I feel like I'm driving the ball well at the minute. I'm
hitting it long and straight, and I just hope I can do that for another
two days.”
Graeme McDowell – 71 (-3 total)
“It
was an up-and-down day. The first nine holes, which was the back nine, I
could have shot anything there, anything from 37 to about 42. But I
managed to hang in there and shoot a really great, grinding level par on
the back nine, my first nine holes. And then my second nine, the front
nine, I started to hit it a little better and give myself some chances
and kind of made a couple silly mistakes. So that's golf. I'd have taken
71, I think, six or seven holes into the round, and I’m happy enough
that I'm hanging around for the weekend, which it's always nice to be
thereabouts.”
Henrik Stenson – 69 (-3 total)
“I'm
pretty happy with the way I'm playing. Maybe I felt like I hit it a
little bit better yesterday than today, but I’m still playing nicely.
It's not an easy golf course even though Jim made it look easy. He was
leaving everyone behind, at least the morning groups. He played really
solid and I played good myself. I’m quite happy with the progress I made
last week before coming into the tournament.”
