WELSHMAN LEADS IN EUROPEAN TOUR EVENT

Determined Dredge dominant in Denmark

- four strokes clear after birdie blitz

 EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Bradley Dredge birdied four out of his last six holes at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort to open up a four-stroke lead at the halfway mark of Made in Denmark.
The 41 year old Welshman, who is slowly regaining his form after an injury-ravaged 2013 campaign, birdied the 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes for a three under par round of 68 to move to eight under par.

Englishman Simon Wakefield (67) is his nearest rival on four under par.
Two-time European Tour winner Dredge is chasing his first title since the 2006 Omega European Masters and is also trying to improve his position in the Race to Dubai, where he currently sits in 182nd position.
He will also have home favourites Thomas Björn (73) and Thorbjørn Olesen (70) to contend with over the weekend, despite joint overnight leader Björn losing ground with a round that contained only one birdie.

The Danish pair are tied for third position on three under par, along with Scotland’s David Drysdale and England’s Garrick Porteous, both of whom signed for rounds of 68.
Key player quotes
Bradley Dredge (-8): “If someone had said I’ll give you a four-shot lead after 36 holes you would take it. We’re halfway through the tournament and I’ve been in similar positions to this before.

"I know a lot can happen and I’ve got to play really well over the weekend. There are some really good players chasing me so I have to keep playing the way I have been and convert the chances I get.
“I feel as though the Tour events I’m playing in this year are like Majors to me, with my situation. I know that when I come out here I have to play well and perform."
Simon Wakefield (-4): “I actually felt I played pretty well today. I was here in 1999 and finished ninth in a Challenge Tour event, but I don’t remember the course at all. The first time I saw the course yesterday was nice, and I played lovely today.”
Thomas Björn (-3): “It was just not quite there today. My wedges were poor today which is unlike me and I didn’t really take advantage of those short holes.

" One birdie all day isn’t really going to do it as you are going to make some birdies in these conditions. It was just not quite there. When I had my chances I didn’t really get the short stick working. It was just one of those days. It was down to fatigue a little bit, playing seven out of eight weeks.
"The brain wasn’t quite with it today. You have to just take it for what it is. I’m still in the golf tournament and I have to work from here.”
Thorbjørn Olesen (-3): “It was a bit easier today and I was not on top of my game. I put myself in some awkward positions off the tee and I didn’t have decent control. I made it tricky for myself
."

EUROPRO TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Andrew Cheese claimed his first HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour title via a play-off after finishing tied with Jack Colegate and Jonathan Caldwell in the Break90 Classic at De Vere Slaley Hall.

Cheese, Colegate (Deangate Ridge Golf Club) and Caldwell (Clandeboye) all concluded the 54-hole event 12 under par on Slaley Halls’ par-72 Priestman Course, with Colegate’s three rounds including a course-record 63 on the second day.

At the end of regulation play the trio headed back to the 18th-tee for the sudden death play-off, where it was Cheese’s approach shot which made the difference.
The Sutton Coldfield man put his ball to within inches of the pin, leaving himself a gimmie putt for birdie.

Colegate, who himself played a tremendous approach after hitting his tee shot right, two-putted for par and Caldwell chipped on from just off the back left edge of the green before holing his first putt to also make par.

The win is Cheese’s first on the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour, and comes in his first season on Europe’s third-tier tour, however the 26 year old is a multiple winner in regional tour events. He moves up to sixth on the Race To El Gouna, from which the top five at the end of the season earn a Challenge Tour card for 2015.

“When myself and Caldwell came in I think we were one behind and at the time Colegate had four holes to play,” explained Cheese, who wins £10,000, a brand new Motocaddy and a Shotsaver range finder.

“I had a putt on the last as well which had been a good chance to get to -13 but I missed it and in all honesty thought that was it, but luckily it was enough to get in the play off.

“I was pleased with the approach shot, it was good. Playing down the hill you never know how far it is going to go but it pitched and landed in a place as good as it could have been without going in.

“It means a lot to get this win. Coming into the season I was looking to make a few cuts and get used to playing at this level, but I have done better than I expected so far. Hopefully I can push on now and get into those top five positions.”

Spaniard Sebastian Garcia Grout finished fourth, two behind the leading trio, while Sam Connor, Ross Kellett and Michael McGeady all completed the tournament nine under par and tied fifth.

LOW SCORING AT FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS

Cesar Monasterio in action today. Picture by courtesy of Getty Images(c).
Hail, Cesar! 61 fires Monasterio clear

Cesar Monasterio equalled the lowest round in European Senior Tour history as a spell-binding 11 under par 61 handed the Argentinian the first round lead at the SSE Scottish Senior Open at Fairmont St Andrews.
Playing in his first season in the Senior ranks having turned 50 last November, Monasterio fired an unblemished nine birdies and an eagle to finish the day three clear of Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori, who also excelled with an eight under par 64 in calm conditions.
On a day of low winds and even lower scoring on the east coast of Scotland, where 40 of the 72 man field broke par, San Miguel de Tucuman native Monasterio put the Torrance Course to the sword and with it equalled the exploits of Scotland’s Andrew Oldcorn, who also shot an 11 under par 61 during in Germany last year.
Having birdied the short third hole, big-hitting Monasterio drove the par four fifth green and sank the remaining 50-foot putt for a stunning eagle and a red-hot start.
Two further gains followed at the sixth and eighth holes as Monasterio reached the turn in just 30 blows, before a run of four straight birdies from the tenth hole meant, at one stage, a 59 was a genuine possibility.
Pars at the 14th and 15th tempered that bid before he found an eighth birdie of the day at the 16th and, despite missing a short putt for a ninth at the following hole, Monasterio finished in style with a birdie at the long closing hole for superb 61 and a place in the history books.
“I am enjoying the Senior Tour, especially today with no wind!” said Monasterio, who won his only European Tour title at the 2006 St Omer Open.

"I didn't drive very well today but my second shots, my irons, and my putting were very good. I had 27 putts."
Monasterio, who still plays on the Challenge Tour occasionally, finished tied fourth in his debut at the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship in June and is this week making just his fourth Senior Tour start.
He added: "I played in South America a lot last year to prepare for the Senior Tour in Europe and this was always one of my big aims to play well here as it is a great Tour with great players.”Former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam started solidly with a four under par 68, a score matched by 2013 Rookie of the Year Steen Tinning, one shot better than England's Barry Lane, who is looking to make it a hat-trick of Scottish Senior Open titles this week in St Andrews.
Leading the home challenge, meanwhile, were Gordon Brand Jnr and Ross Drummond, who both shot three under par rounds of 69, while defending champion Santiago Luna finished with a 74 amongst a small group of 23 players over par

FIRST COUNTY TITLE IN FORTY YEARS

 ALEX McKAY FINDS

TIME TO WIN ANGUS

SENIOR TITLE

After a busy summer of organising boys' events and junior inter-area matches in his roles as Angus county junior convener and Monifieth Golf Club junior convener, Alex McKay found the time to win the Angus county seniors championship at Kirriemuir Golf Club this week.
Before he moved from Glasgow to Dundee some 20 years ago, Alex had been club champion at Lethamhill, Crow Wood and Williamwood golf clubs.
In the early 90s he was runner-up in the Glasgow county match-play and stroke-play championships in consecutive years.
"After competing at golf for 40 years, this is my first ever county title. I would have put resurgence in my own golf down to the inspiration I get from watching the top Angus boys and youths doing so well over the past month," said modest Alex.

Camilo Villegas: On course for FedExCup play-offs
Camilo Villegas: On course for FedExCup play-offs

Camilo Villegas made a welcome return to form as he earned the first-round lead at the Wyndham Championship after a flawless opening 63.

First round leaderboard

(USA unless stated, par 70):
-7 Camilo Villegas (Col)
-6 William McGirt
-6 Webb Simpson
-5 Paul Casey (Eng)
-5 Scott Langley
-5 Martin Laird (Sco)
-5 Heath Slocum, Andrew Loupe
The big-hitting Colombian found conditions at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro to his liking as he carded five birdies and one eagle to finish the opening day with a one-shot lead.
The 32-year-old, who regained his full PGA Tour card last season, now looks assured to have cemented his place in the lucrative FedExCup play-offs having started the week ranked 105th.
He started with a birdie at the 10th and picked up further shots at 13 and 15 before finishing with a flourish.
Villegas birdied the fourth and then converted a superb approach to three feet for an eagle at the next, and he rolled in a 15-foot putt for a two at the seventh before parring in.
The three-time PGA Tour winner, yet to record a top-10 finish this season, holds a narrow advantage over William McGirt and former US Open champion Webb Simpson.
McGirt mixed eight birdies with two bogeys, while Simpson gave US Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson a timely reminder of his abilities as he raced out of the blocks with birdies at his opening four holes.
Simpson, a leading candidate to earn a captain’s pick for next month’s showpiece at Gleneagles, reached seven under at the 15th, but he relinquished a share of the lead with his first error of the day at 17.
Meanwhile, Martin Laird and Paul Casey boosted their chances of teeing up in next week’s FedExCup play-off opener as both opening with five-under 65s.
Casey currently holds the 125th and final place in the standings, while Laird is 136th and needs a decent cheque to extend his season.
Casey kept a bogey off his five-birdie card, and Laird managed an eagle, four birdies and blotted his round only once at the sixth.
But Laird’s fellow Scot Stephen Gallacher, who is currently on the fringes of Paul McGinley’s European Ryder Cup team, laboured to an erratic one-over 71 while Padraig Harrington is a shot further back.

FINLAY MORRIS WON BRITISH BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1961

Finlay Morris with the British boys' championship trophy he won this week in 1961. Playing out of Cawder Golf Club, Finlay beat C Clark (Scarborough High School) 3 and 2 in the final.

E-mail from Mike Smith
Dear Colin,
Thank you for your fitting tribute to Finlay Morris which you wrote in 2009 - and I just discovered when, upon a whim, "googled" his name.

I well remember Finlay winning the 1963 Scottish boys championship at North Berwick and watched after I lost in the last 16 if recall correctly.

He was a man playing a boys' game and, as we all thought, destined for great things in the world of golf.
I left Scotland in 1966 and was living in New Zealand when I heard of Finlay's death. I have often thought of this immense talent and of course wondered, what if ....
I grew up in Monifieth and apprenticed as a clubmaker with the Tom Morris shop in St Andrews, back when we had clubmakers.

My lifelong friend, Ian McLeod, professional at Monifieth, sadly passed away a year or so ago.
Ah, the older we get, the more names we have to remember.
I have lived in Canada for many years now but still return on a regular basis. I will be back this September during Ryder Cup, but will probably watch on TV from the back bar in the Monifieth Club.
Thank you for recalling Finlay's short but brilliant career.

Mike Smith

+Finlay Morris died in a car accident - he wasn't driving, he was a passenger - returning from a golf trip to England in November 1967
