FINLAY MORRIS WON BRITISH BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1961

Finlay Morris with the British boys' championship trophy he won this week in 1961. Playing out of Cawder Golf Club, Finlay beat C Clark (Scarborough High School) 3 and 2 in the final.

E-mail from Mike Smith
Dear Colin,
Thank you for your fitting tribute to Finlay Morris which you wrote in 2009 - and I just discovered when, upon a whim, "googled" his name.

I well remember Finlay winning the 1963 Scottish boys championship at North Berwick and watched after I lost in the last 16 if recall correctly.

He was a man playing a boys' game and, as we all thought, destined for great things in the world of golf.
I left Scotland in 1966 and was living in New Zealand when I heard of Finlay's death. I have often thought of this immense talent and of course wondered, what if ....
I grew up in Monifieth and apprenticed as a clubmaker with the Tom Morris shop in St Andrews, back when we had clubmakers.

My lifelong friend, Ian McLeod, professional at Monifieth, sadly passed away a year or so ago.
Ah, the older we get, the more names we have to remember.
I have lived in Canada for many years now but still return on a regular basis. I will be back this September during Ryder Cup, but will probably watch on TV from the back bar in the Monifieth Club.
Thank you for recalling Finlay's short but brilliant career.

Mike Smith

+Finlay Morris died in a car accident - he wasn't driving, he was a passenger - returning from a golf trip to England in November 1967
