WESTLAKE, Ohio – Australian Mathew Goggin fired a course-record, 9-under 62 Friday afternoon and charged through the pack to grab a share of the second-round lead at the Web.com Tour's Cleveland Open.

Goggin was nearly flawless on a picture-perfect day in northeast Ohio, hitting 17 greens in regulation and leapfrogging the field at Lakewood Country Club.
His late afternoon run put him at 9-under 133 total, the same as Alabama’s Jeff Curl, who added a 4-under 67 earlier to his opening round of 66.
The co-leaders are one up on South Korean Whee Kim (66) and Michigan’s Tom Gillis (67). Aaron Watkins (66) and 18-year old Si Woo Kim (69) are two off the pace.
Scotland’s Jimmy Gunn (67), Andy Pope (68), Cameron Percy (67) of Australia and San Jose’s Mark Hubbard (64) are three back on 136
The early talk Friday was about the four inch rough that has forced many in the field to throttle back tee shots in favor of finding fairways. The 39-year old Goggin was falling in line with majority thinking on Thursday and found himself two-over par after eight holes.
“I sort of picked up on something mid-round,” said the Charlotte, North Carolina resident. “I’ve been practicing really well but just not hitting the ball very well in play. I kind of freed it up on the back nine and just played more aggressively. I just tried to hit it hard and have that go for it a bit more mentality.”
Goggin’s change of pace turned lemons into lemonade and bogeys into birdies, 12 of them in his last 28 holes.
“I don’t think there’s much point (to laying up),” said Goggin, a four-time winner on the Web.com Tour.
“You just let it fly and try to be aggressive because the rough’s not terrible if you’ve got 9-iron, wedge or 8-iron. If you’ve got a 7- or 6-iron it’s thick enough to make those shots tough. You know the old saying of aggressively at conservative targets.”
While Goggin put his foot the gas, Curl did just the opposite and had similar success.
“The fairway is key. I’ve been playing pretty conservatively on some holes,” said Curl. “If you hit it in the fairway you can score and luckily I’ve been doing that.”
Curl precision has improved thanks in part to a lesson his got from his father, US PGA Tournament winner Rod Curl, three weeks ago when the younger was given a sponsor exemption into the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, where dad was the winner in 1974.
“I made the cut somehow even though I played so bad. My dad gave me a lesson on Friday night and I just have to thank him for that,” said Curl. “We went from trying to draw the ball, which I’ve been doing all year, to hitting fades. I was getting so stuck and I feel great.”
