ST ANDREWS LINKS TROPHY 72-HOLE TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND

FRENCHMAN GETS ROUND NEW

COURSE IN ONLY SIXTY STROKES!

Gregoire Schoeb, a 21-year-old +3 player from Strasbourg, made a mockery of his World Amateur Golf Ranking of No 351 - and only the 12th best in France - with a superlative round of 11-under-par 60 over the New Course today in the first round of the St Andrews Links Trophy.
Schoeb had two eagles (one a 2, the other a 3) and seven birdies. He did not have a bogey in halves of 30.
He birdied the first, got an eagle 2 at the 367yd second, a birdie 4 at the long third, an eagle 3 at the 481yd par-5 eighth and a par at the ninth for 30 out.
And there was no slackening off his blistering pace. He birdied the long 12th, the 15th, 16th, short 17th and 18th for 30 home.
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), the 2012 Scottish amateur champion and a student at San Diego University, California, had a 66 (35-31)
Forrest was six under par for the last 11 holes.
He birdied the long eighth, 10th, 11th, short 13th, 15th and 18th. Like the leader, Forrest was bogey-free.
And another Scot, former boys champion Bradley Neil from Blairgowrie, also had a flawless card as he compiled a 67. He birdied the long third, fourth, long 12th and 14th in halves of 34-33.
Ireland's Gavin Moynihan, winner of the Scottish open amateur stroke-play title at Panmure on Sunday, had to settle for a par-matching round of 71, which leaves him a staggering 11 shots  behind the leader!
Geoff Drakeford, the Australian who led almost throughout the Scottish stroke play championship at the weekend - until the vital closing stages, returned a 64 to share second place with Italy's Federico Zucchetti with a lot of players still to come in.
Jamie Savage (Cawder), recent winner of the Irish open amateur stroke-play, came in near tea-time with a 65 to occupy fourth place. Savage had halves of 32-33 with birdies at the first, long third, fourth, sixth, 10th, 11th and 14th. He dropped a shot at the very last hole.
Former Scottish amateur championship beaten finalist Daniel Kay (Dunbar) posteda five-under 66 after going out in 31 with birdies at the second, third, seventh, eighth and ninth. He kept it up after the turn with birdies at the 11th and 12th before subsiding with bogeys at the 13th and 15th. Still, a good effort from Daniel.
