ALAN DOIG UPSETS FAVOURITE BARRY

REID TO WIN ABERDEEN LINKS TITLE

Alan Doig is the new, first-time winner of the Aberdeen Links championship as members of the Caledonian club won all three titles at stake over the evening.
Doig, 36-year-old nephew of two-time former champion Stewart Finnie - who caddied for him in the final -  beat the favourite, Caledonian clubmate Barry Reid, the No 1 seed, having won the Royal Aberdeen Medal as leading qualifier, 3 and 2 in the final.
Doig had the better of the outward half. He was two up after two and went four up when Reid, a former Links champion, lost a ball at the fourth and the fifth to a birdie.
Reid had his first success at the sixth but Doig was three up at the turn. After a big drive, Reid had a winning two-putt birdie at the 12th to cut his deficit to two holes.
But it was so far and no further for Reid. Doig closed him out with a par at the 16th.
Said Doig: "I've played in the Aberdeen Links championship for some 15 years. I'be been in the semi-finals once before and the quarters a half-dozen times but this was the first time as far as the final was concerned.
"So I am really thrilled to have finally won the title.
I hurt my back polaying football last Saturday so I have been on painkillers and needed someone to carry my clubs.
"That's where Stewart Finnie, my uncle, did a great job for me carrying my clubs. He has a wealth of experience and helped me get through the final. He kept me calm as it was wlays going to be a tight match.
"I feel sorry for Barry as he s a great layer. The difference between us on the night was that I holed the putts and he didn't."]
Doug was approximately two under par for the holes played.
Alan Sheldrick (Caledonian) beat Northern's Steven Muir by one hole in the final of the Handicap Shield.
Links scratch champion 25 years ago, Sheldrick, is now 60 and plays off seven while Muir has five of a handicap. So Alan received two shots from his opponent.
Sheldrick was two up after seven holes but lost the eighth, ninth and 10th to go one down. Alan, receiving a shot at the hole, squared the match at the 14th.
Sheldrick then went one up at the 15th before halving the last three holes for victory.
The Murray Cup final was won by 12-year-old Kincorth Academy pupil Brook Smith (Caledonian) who beat clubmate Chris Carson by 4 and 3.
Smith plays off 15, Carson has 20 of a handicap.
Smith was two down after seven but squared it with wins at the eighth and ninth. The youngster was never behind after winning the 10th.
Carson had beaten Smith's older brother Reece in the semi-finals.
