AUSSIE LEADS BY TWO AT HALFWAY IN CARRICK NEILL SCOTTISH STROKE PLAY

SCOTLAND HOPES LIE WITH GIBSON,

BURNS AND SAVAGE AT PANMURE

Can either or all the three young Scots in contention mount a Sunday-best challenge to follow in the footsteps of Wallace Booth, the last Scot, six years ago, to win the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship?
It's a tough question and an even tougher task for Scott Gibson, Jamie Savage and George Burns to tackle over the final 36 holes of this year's event, sponsored by Carrick Neill and being staged at one of the oldest courses in the country, Panmure Golf Club, just north of Carnoustie.
Overnight leader Geoff Drakeford from Australia shot a second-round, one-under-par 69 in the sunshine to have a two-stroke advantage over the star-studded field. What a difference a year makes!Last year at Southerness the 22-year-old from the Commonwealth Golf Club, Victoria, missed the halfway cut. Now the man from Down Under has got the field in that position below him on the scoreboard.
This time round Drakeford has compiled an impressive six-under-par total of 134 over the par-70 Angus course which is one of the oldest in the country.
He was disappointed that he had not stretched his lead after birdieing the long second, sixth, eighth and 12th to be four under par on the day, having gone out in 32.
But the Panmure links bit back on the inward half which the Aussie had reduced to 31 strokes in the first round.
He ran up a double bogey 7 at the long 14th and also bogeyed the 18th to come home in 37.
Scotland's hopes lie in young hands.
Scott Gibson (Southerness) came in with a second-round 66, a very good effort of five birdies and one bogey to join Welsh Walker Cup player Rhys Pugh (68-68) and England's Ryan Evans (Wellingborough) (70-66) in joint second place on 136, two shots off the pace.

Glasgow youngster George Burns (Williamwood), winner of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy tournament last weekend, came into the reckoning with a brilliant 66 for 139, the same halfway tally as Cawder's Jamie Savage, winner a week or two ago of the Irish men's open amateur stroke play championship.
Burns got an eagle 3 at the long second hole for the second day in a row and followed that up with birdies at the third and eighth to be out in a bogey-free 31. Another birdie, at the 16th, had Burns very much in the picture but he bogeyed the 17th.
A total of 47 players with totals of four-over-par 144 and better finally made the cut.
There was a huge collective sigh of relief from the clutch of Scots on the limit mark. They included Grant Forrest (Craigielaw and San Diego University), the highest rated Scot in the World Amateur Rankings,
Forrest bogeyed the 11th, 12th and 15th for a 71 to put himself in the danger zone.
Also sweating it out on 144 were Scottish champion Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) after a 71, reinstated pro Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), also 71, Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) 73, Ewan Scott (St Andrews) 69 and Greig Marchbank (Thornhill) 74.
