George Burns with the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Cardrona.

BURNS BEATS CURRAN IN PLAY-OFF

 FOR STEPHEN GALLACHER TROPHY
REPORT FROM SGU WEBSITE
Williamwood’s George Burns sank an eight-foot birdie putt at the first extra play-off hole to cap a superb final day and win the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Macdonald Cardrona, near Peebles.
The Scotland boy international posted a six-under par 67 in the final round – which would have equalled the course record but for the preferred lies ruling – to tie Harburn’s Christopher Curran on 214, five-under par after 54 holes.
Burns fired 10 birdies in his round, opening with three consecutive birdies, while Curran produced his own hat-rick of birdies in his back nine from the 13th to move into a share of the lead after regulation play.
At the first extra hole, Curran found trouble off the tee, but recovered to salvage a par 5, but Burns got down in two from 60 feet for birdie to take his first Scottish Hydro SGU Boys Order of Merit title.
Overnight leader Ben Kinsley (St Andrews) dropped three shots in the final two holes to slip back to third place on 218, with Cawder’s Calum Fyfe producing a fine two-under 71 to clinch fourth spot, a further shot back on level par.
Burns follows last year’s winner, Ewen Ferguson, who went on to win the British boys championship at at Hoylake before clinching the Scottish boys championship at West Kilbride earlier this year.
