MICHAEL BUCHN WINS ROYAL DORNOCH TROPHY

By ROBIN WILSON
Cruden Bay's Michael Buchan negotiated his way round each of the two courses used in 75 blows on both to win the Gardner Trophy at Royal Dornoch last Saturday while local member Stan Dodd became a first time winner of the Fraser Shield.

Scratch golfer Buchan is not an unfamiliar face to Dornoch where in the past he has won the North of Scotland 72 hole championship and came second in this event twelve months ago before going one better last Saturday by lifting the scratch trophy with his 36 hole total of 150.

Buchan's first round 75 over the Struie Course trailed by one behind local John Shepherd with the holder Kevin Matheson leaving himself a lot to do in Round two after a 78 on the Struie. Also tucked in behind the leader with cards of 75's was Dornoch summer based member from the USA ,Stan Dodd, the eventual winner of the Fraser Shield and Stewart Mackintosh (Creiff) who finished third twelve months ago.
In the year that has passed Mackintosh improved to the runner's up position by virtue of his second round 76 over the championship course where Shepherd added a second round 77 for third place. Local county cup bronze medallist Brian Urquhart put together another couple of steady rounds, two 76's, for fourth place.
Holder of an eight handicap, Stan Dodd laid the foundation of his first Fraser Shield success with a first round nett 67which bettered the Struie CSS by six, then again bettering the CSS of the championship course with nett 72.' for an easy local win under the confined to members rule. Not quite from the other side of the pond but from over the Skye Bridge came Allan Gordon to take the second place in the handicap section with nett 70's over both venues.
