Tarland-based Daniel Thompsett, a junior member of Aboyne Golf Club, completed the Paul Lawrie North-east boys’ stroke-play and match-play titles double at Westhill Golf Club today.
Thompsett, who will enrol at  Rocky Mountain College, Montana next month (he will be 18 on August 24), won the stroke play title for the second year in a row by the runaway margin of 11 shots with rounds of 69 and 65 for four-under-par total of 134. Runner-up was Newmachar’s Chris Lamb with 73 and 72 for 145.
Paul Lawrie’s two sons, Craig and Michael, tied for third place with Andrew Carrell (Peterculter) on 148. A card countback went against Michael Lawrie in deciding the four leading players to contest the match-play title for the Bill Brown Trophy
In the semi-finals, Thompsett beat Carrell 4 and 3, while Lamb beat Craig Lawrie by one hole.
In a very good final, in which the contestants completed 20 holes in little over three hours, Thompsett beat Lamb with a birdie 2 at the short second extra hole. Lamb, two down after eight, won the ninth, 11th and 13th with a two-under-par run, to go one up on the 14th tee. He was still one up on the 18th tee but Thompsett rose to the pressure by birdieing that hole to square the final and take it into extra holes.
