72-HOLE TENNANT CUP THIS WEEKEND
James Byrne leads by one shot at halfway stage
Banchory's James Byrne leads at the halfway stage of the Tennant Cup after rounds of 73 and 68 for a one-under-par total of 141 at Glasgow Gailes, Ayrshire.
The 20-year-old, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, one of only two Scots to reach the last 16 of the British amateur championship at Formby this past week, leads by one shot from the first-round leader Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) and last year's SGU Order of Merit winner, Steven McEwan (Caprington).
Paterson did not cope as well with the blustery conditions in the afternoon as he had done with a splendid four-under-par round of 67 in the first round. He had four successive 3s in that round, including an eagle and two birdies.
But his second-round 75 was more humdrum and leaves him alongside McEwan, who had a pair of 71s for 142 as they bid to overhaul Byrne, a student at Arizona State University, over Sunday's final two rounds at Glasgow Golf Club's other course - the parkland Killermont.
Gavin Dear (Murrayshall), Scotland's top player in the R&A World Amateur Rankings, looked poised to challenge after a morning 70 but he couold do no better than a 75 in the afternoon, the same pattern of scoring as that of former Scottish match-play champion, Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie).
The leading 40 and ties on 155 and better qualified for the final two rounds.
