GREG PATERSON’S PURPLE PATCH TAKES

PUTS HIM THREE CLEAR IN TENNANT CUP

Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) strung together four 3s in a four-under-par run from the 12th to the 15th to take a three-stroke lead at the end of the first round of the 72-hole Tennant Cup SGU Order of Merit event at Glasgow Gailes links course, Ayrshire today (Saturday).
Paterson, with the help of a freshening wind, sailed home in five-under-par 30, highlighted by his purple patch of a par 3 at the short 12th, a birdie 3 at the 13th, an eagle 3 at the 14th, and a birdie 3 at the 15th.
He led by two shots from Murrayshall’s Gavin Dear from Scone, and Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie).
Dear, winner of the Irish open amateur stroke-play earlier this season, covered the inward half in 32 while former Scottish match-play champion Campbell birdied the 17th and 18th for an inward half of 33.
Sharing fourth place on par 71 were Steven McEwan (Caprington), Barry Brooks (Meldrum House) and Fraser Fotheringham (Nairn).
Gordon Stevenson (Whitecraigs) and Fraser McKenna (Balmore) came next on 72.
