Macaulay only seed to make

it through to quarter-finals

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
When did a Scottish Golf Union seeding committee last get it so wrong?
Only ONE of their eight choices to be quarter-finalists in the Allied Surveyors' Scottish amateur championship has actually made it through to Friday morning's last eight at Carnoustie - No 1 ranked Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
Doesn't that show just how good, how consistent a player Callum has become over the past two seasons.
Scottish amateur golf will miss him when he turns pro.
In fairness, Scott Stewart-Cation (Balbirnie Park), Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) and Russell Thornton (US) had little or no claim to be seeded, although Paterson did win an SGU Order of Merit event, the Sutherland Chalice, last year.
They are rank outsiders who have proved that old American NFL saying: "On any given day, anyone can beat anybody."
You could make out a case for Steven McEwan (Caprington), the leader of the SGU Order of Merit table being still there, and also Paul Betty (Hayston), Gordon Yates (Hilton Park) and Scott Barrowman (Dollar and Stirling University) who showed his bent for match-play in claiming some notable American scalps as Europe won the Palmer Cup match.
The last session of play today saw the demise of two more seeds, Scott Henry, the No 8 from Cardross, and Scottish boys match-play champion Michael Stewart, the No 6 from Troon Welbeck.
The quarter-final ties are:
8.00 Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) v Paul Betty (Hayston).
8.15 Scott Stewart-Cation (Balbirnie Park) v Greg Paterson (St Andrews New).
8.30 Steven McEwan (Caprington) v Scott Borrowman (Dollar).
8.45 Gordon Yates (Hilton Park) v Russell Thornton (US).

FIFTH ROUND RESULTS
CALLUM MACAULAY (1) (Tulliallan) bt Scott Knowles (Kingsknowe) 4 and 3.
Paul Betty (Hayston) bt SCOTT HENRY (8) (Cardross) 3 and 2.
Scott Stewart-Cation (Balbirnie Park) bt Campbell Donaldson (Downfield) 2 and 1.
Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) bt Scott Mann (Carnoustie) 1 hole.

Steven McEwan (Caprington) bt MICHAEL STEWART (6) (Troon Welbeck) 3 and 2.
Scott Borrowman (Dollar) bt Mark Lamb (Haddington) 2 and 1.
Gordon Yates (Hilton Park) bt Stuart Graham (Blairgowrie) 4 and 3.
Russell Thornton (US) bt Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) 3 and 2.
