Big names are rolled over on a long day at Carnoustie

Seeds McNicoll and Dear

+ Gallagher and McAlpine

take the count

The third day's play in the Allied Surveyors Scottish amateur championship was finally halted at 9.30pm because of darkness on the Carnoustie links.
But not before some big names had been put to the sword.

No 3 seed Keir McNicoll, fancied to follow up his St Andrews Links Trophy victory with a title win over his home course. He lost to Edzell's William Bremner, a good player who has improved with regular play on the August to May US college circuit but not considered in McNicoll's class ... until now. Lewis Kirton (Newmachar) ended Ian Hutcheon's hopes of turning the clock back 30-odd years and the University of Louisville, Kentucky student won again later, disposing of one of the dark horses of the tournament, Fraserburgh's Kris Nicol who has had a series of good finishes in SGU Order of Merit events this season.

Defending champion John Gallagher (Swanston New), picture above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, lost by one hole to Balmore's up-and-comer Fraser McKenna.

Kevin McAlpine, national champion at match-play and stroke-play in the past, is on the sidelines now. He went down by 2 and 1 to a Balbirnie Park player with a double-barrelled name that did not figure in any pre-championship speculation - Scott Stewart-Cation.

Another seed went out before the shutters came down for the day.

No 4 seed Gavin Dear from Murrayshall lost to Campbell Donaldson from Downfield, Dundee.

The only seeds still standing are:
No 1 Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan).

No 2 Wallace Booth (Comrie)

No 6 Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck).

No 7 Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie).

No 8 Scott Henry (Cardross).
