European Tour debutant Craig Lee from Stirling staged a gritty recovery to be lying joint third at the halfway stage of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa.
Starting at the 10th tee, Lee, pictured right, a graduate of the recent European Tour Qualifying School, dropped four shots in his first six holes. But he did not panic and salvaged a one-under-par 71 to add to his opening round of 68 for a 36-hole tally of five-under-par 139.
South African Omar Sandys leads the field into the third round with a pair of 68s for 136.
Lee Slattery had a bogey-free round of 65 to be second on his own at 138.
The Englishman hit seven birdies, including five during his second nine holes, to add to his first round 73 for an overall total of 138 and six under par.
Home favourite Ernie Els ended his second round with a three-under-par 69 to add to his first day 70 to stay well in the picture.
Els said: "I played really well - I really played well with seven birdies. The bogeys that I made were really soft. I'm really just disappointed bogeying the last, so not too happy."
The other big name in the tournament, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke, bounced back from his up and down opening round to shoot a solid three-under-par 69, to move onto two under for the competition.
