ORKNEY SURPRISE PACKET OF THIS YEAR'S
NORTHERN COUNTIES CUP AT NAIRN
Orkney, one of the eight clubs who were originators of the Northern Counties Cup golf tournament 107 years ago, are hot on the trail of their first-ever success in the men's double foursomes knock-out trophy.
Martin Fleet, Mark McGinn, Stuart Rendall and Andrew Bonner are proving the surprise packet of this weeks' tournament at Nairn Golf Club.
They reached Saturday morning's semi-finals - in which they will play the host club's No 1 team - by beating a strong-going Deeside team by five holes.
Fleet and McGinn finished three up on Andrew Campbell and Alastair Fiddes, while Rendall and Bonner were two holes to the good against Simon Cruickshank and John Robertson.
Nairn swept past Fraserburgh in the round of the last eight, beationg them by nine holes. Robert Smith and Neil Hampton finished four holes up on Kris Nicol and John Mitchell, Alex Scott and Steve Macdonald beat Malcolm Tait and Graham Smtih by five holes.
Murcar Links and Tain 1 will meet in the first semi-final.
Murcar Links survived a topsy-turvy quarter-final against Peterhead. Murcar Links' top pairing of Terry Mathieson and Billy Main went down by four holes but their second string of Anthony Bews and Ian Galbraith more than made up the difference with a seven-hole winning margin.
