LOCH NESS WIN DRAMATIC FINISH AGAINST
INVERNESS'S TWO OTHER CLUBS
The annual match between the three golf clubs in Inverness had another dramatic finish at Loch Ness where the home team held onto the trophy.
The format of the competition is for each club to supply a 10-man team and each player plays a stableford round along with one player from the other two clubs. The result of each game is decided by the stablford score and if a player beats both his opponents he receives 3 points, a win and a loss gets 2 points and no wins in the game is still rewarded with 1 point.
Loch Ness came out of the traps quickly and took the first three games, with Stewart McCallum of the host club making 41 points from his handicap of eight.
Torvean rallied, however, and the next four games saw them secure top points in each one. Jamie Gordon from Loch Ness stopped the rot and got them back into the match and with Inverness' Dougie Alcock gaining their only win of the day it came down to the last match with Torvean leading Loch Ness by 2 points.
Loch Ness needed a win and Torvean to finish last to tie the match and take the trophy on a count back with any other result giving Torvean the cup.
Stephen Moss from Loch Ness turned out to be the hero but only by the slimmest of margins. As the scores were being tallied for the final three-ball Moss had tied with Alan Coutts from Inverness on 30 Stableford points with Torvean's Donnie Cumming scoring 28 and taking the the solitary point for last in the group.
A card play-off was required to separate Moss and Coutts but both scored 11 points for the back 9 and so it was down to the score over the last 6 holes. Moss managed 9 to Coutts' 8 and thus the victory and the trophy were taken by Loch Ness.
With the scores for each game being relayed over the big screen even the excitement of the Soilheim Cup was pushed into the shadows.
Host captain Tom Smith thanked all players for a thrilling match and hoped that the spirit and camaraderie shown between all players would continue in the follow years' matches.
