CELTIC PRO TOUR PRESS RELEASE
CONSTABLE PAINTS THE PERFECT PICTURE
Cardiff’s Adam Constable led from start to finish, to win the East Wales Classic at Cottrell Park this week.
This was the seventh event of the Dragon Tour, Wales’ first professional golf tour, and now part of the Celtic Pro Tour, also involving events in Scotland and Ireland.
In excellent conditions, Constable shot a five under par 67 on day one, to lead by two strokes from Matthew Prior (Machynys Peninsula), Lewis James (ISM/Southerndown) and local assistant professional Barrie Jones who all shot rounds of three under par 69.
On the second day, Constable stretched his lead over his closest challengers, by returning another five under par round of 67, to finish on –10, a two-round total of 134 with nearest challenger, James finishing three shots further back on -7 after a second round 68, leaving him on 137.
Constable secured his first Celtic Pro event title, a cheque for £1,000, a Sunderland of Scotland waterproof suit, a Powerbug trolley and 100 Order of Merit points.
James is in a rich vein of form on the Tour, having also finished in the runners up position in the Swansea Bay Open at Clyne last month. He picked up £500 and 90 points.
The consistent Prior collected £250, following two solid rounds of 69, which left him in outright third place, on a total of 138, earning him 80 points.
The joint best round of the tournament, was 67 on day two by Wenvoe Castle’s, Nick James, who won the voucher for the leading amateur, and fourth place overall on -5 and a two round total of 139.
In fourth place in the professional event was James Morgan (Celtic Manor) on -2, who won £150, with Scot Paul Doherty (vale-hotel.com) making his debut on the Tour, in fifth place in the pro field on -1, winning £100. On the same score was English amateur Kevin Goude (Tydd St Giles)
The next Celtic Pro Tour event, the South East Wales Open takes place at St Mary’s Hotel & Resort, next Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th September.
Golfers are advised that this event was due to take place at two separate venues over the two days, St Mary’s Hotel and St Mellons, but will now take place entirely at the Pencoed course.
Another date for an extra event at St Mellons is being sought for later in the year. For more information on entry and payments, visit the website at www.celticpro.com, or contact tour director, Rhydian Thomas on 07861 686568. Entries must be received by 6pm on Saturday 22nd September.
“As the Tour enters the final stages of the season, it’s great to see players who have come through the Tour doing so well on bigger stages,” said tour director Rhydian Thomas.
He was commenting on last year’s Order of Merit winner, Alex Smith (Pyle and Kenfig), and fellow Celtic Pro Tour members Ryan Thomas (amateur, Aberdare) and Challenge Tour player James Williams (Pontypridd) having qualified for stage 2 of the European Tour Qualifying School after making it through stage 1 at The Oxfordshire club last week.
Smith was outstanding in posting a four round total of -20 to finish runner up, while Thomas and Williams finished on -4. Recent Celtic Pro Tour participant Paul Doherty, also qualified on -9.
The four now move on to Stage 2 in Spain next month, and will be joined by Irish golfer Gary Cullen, who qualified in third place at Chart Hills on -8. Cullen was the winner of the Celtic Pro Tour’s Wicklow Open in July.
