A brilliant season for Argentinian golf is well placed to continue after Eduardo Romero moved into the 36-hole lead at the Wentworth Senior Masters, as he looks to wrap up a record-setting third straight victory in the event.
Romero rediscovered his putting touch in front of large galleries at a sun-drenched Wentworth Club on Saturday, reeling off four birdies down the back nine of the Edinburgh Course to add a three under par 69 to his opening 71.
It leaves Romero on four under par 140 and one stroke clear of Ireland’s Des Smyth and Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori heading into Sunday’s final round.
Aberdonian John Chillas is the Scotland standard-bearer on 143 after rounds of 70 and 73. Sam Torrance had a most uncharacteristic second-round 79 for 149.
Having watched long-time friend Angel Cabrera win the US Open in June and one of Argentina’s brightest young stars, Andres Romero, finish third at The Open Championship and then win last week at The Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship of Europe, Romero senior is keen to get in on the winning act this season.
“I have been playing good for a long time and I feel strong and comfortable. I am hitting the ball long – maybe it’s the Argentinian steak! You’ve seen with the victories of Cabrera and Andres Romero that our golf is good – we are working well with the younger players in my country. I think this is the year for South America,” said Romero, who has enjoyed eight top tens so far this year, including a runner-up finish in the US Senior PGA Championship and a tied fourth in last week’s Senior Open Championship at Muirfield.
In contrast, Smyth has struggled for form this year and the Irishman has ground out rounds of 70 and 71. He will partner Romero and Tomori in the final group on Sunday but is not hopeful of denying the Argentine a third consecutive victory, following his wins by eight strokes in 2005 and by a margin of two in 2006.
“I am worried about tomorrow to be honest, as my game is not good. I will have to do a lot of work on the range tonight and hope I can find something,” added Smyth.
Among four players tied for fourth place on two under par 142 is 1963 Open Champion Bob Charles, who has matched his age on both days with rounds of 71.
