FROM THE R&A WEBSITE:

Three times former champion John Kemp and his John O’Gaunt clubmate Mark Wharton were both bundled out of the British Mid-Amateur Championship in the third round today as Anglo-Scot Sandy Twynholm, beaten in the final in 1998, renewed his bid for the title at Alwoodley, Leeds.

Kemp lost 4 and 3 to Coventry’s England international Matthew Cryer while Wharton was beaten at the 19th by Paul Moultrie from Troon Portland.

Morpeth’s Twynholm, beaten by Gary Wolstenholme at Ganton in 1998, had the biggest win of the morning to move into the quarter-finals with a 5 and 4 victory over Germany’s Ulrich Schulte.

“I got off to a flying start by winning the first three holes with two pars and a birdie,” said Twynholm. He lost the next two, but won the ninth where Schulte suggested a half as both players were five feet from the pin after their approach putts.

"I said no, he missed his putt and I got mine to go back to two up,” said Twynholm.

He won the 10th with a birdie and the 11th and 13th with pars before the match was conceded on the short 15th.

Kemp, seeking to become the first player to win the title four times, admitted: “I just didn’t play well today and Matthew did. I didn’t give him much of a match I’m afraid.”

Cryer won the first three holes with a par and two birdies and held that lead until the turn. He won the 10th, lost the 12th then won the 14th to be four up with four to play.

“I was on the green for two at the 15th and putted up stiff, while John was in the greenside bunker and conceded the hole. I played nicely tee to green all the way round, just made a couple of mistakes on the greens,” said Cryer.

Wharton put up a determined fight, coming back from five down with seven to play against Moultrie, but then losing at the first extra hole. “He hit his second just over the back and then left his chip 12 feet short while I was 15 feet away in two and got a solid par,” said Moultrie, who admitted he was a bit shell-shocked after the way Wharton fought back.

With his 12-year-old son Callum as his caddie, Moultrie, a 42-year-old chartered surveyor from Troon, took advantage of some indifferent play by Wharton earlier on to race to four up at the turn.

“I won the first, fourth, sixth and ninth with pars then went five up when I eagled the long 10th with a three-wood, a five-iron to 15ft and one putt,” said Moultrie.Wharton won three holes in a row but was still two down at the 17th.

“He got a great birdie there," said Moultrie. "Then I made a mess of the 18th and conceded the hole, but thankfully my par was good enough at the first extra hole.”

Paul Simson beat fellow American Mark Gaynor 2 and 1, while the third American in the third round, Steven Hudson, lost by two holes to Cambridgeshire left-hander Lee Yearn. “It as a bit scrappy but the pins were in difficult places,” said Yearn.

In the other matches Ed Richardson from Rye in Sussex beat Francois Illouz from Paris 4 and 3, Durham City’s Graeme Marchbank reached the last eight with a 2 and 1 win over Nigel Sweet from nearby Moortown, while Hamilton’s Euan Moir beat Cambridgeshire captain Jody Greenall from Elton Furze 2 and 1.
