FRASER FOTHERINGHAM REACHES FINAL
OF BRITISH BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP

Fraser Fotheringham from Nairn has won his way through to Saturday's 36-hole final of the British boys' championship at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, South Wales.
Playing far above anything he has previously achieved Fraser will be following in the footsteps of Fraserburgh's Jordan Findlay who reached the British boys' final at Conwy, North Wales in 2004 - where he won the title - and 2005 at Hunstanton in Norfolk.
Three times in the final in the past four years by a North or North-east teenager is a brilliant record!
Fotheringham beat England's Eddie Pepperell (Drayton Park) by 4 and 3 in this afternoon's semi-final.
In the other tie, Spain's Emilio Cuartero bt Italy's Cristiano Terragni by 3 and 1.
The 36-hole final between Fotheringham and Cuartero will tee off at 8.30am and 1.30pm.
Good luck, Fraser!
FROM THE R&A WEBSITE:
Fraser Fotheringham had never been past the second round of any match-play event until this week - now he has survived seven rounds of the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl and will play in the 36-hole final tomorrow against Emilio Cuartero of Spain.
Fotheringham's match against strong English international Eddie Pepperell turned on a typical match-play situation at the par-5 12th where the Scot was one hole ahead.
Both players were close the the out-of-bounds area to the left of the green with their second shots, but Pepperell hit the better recovery to six feet. Fotheringham was 20 feet away but the pendulum swung in his favour when he holed the birdie putt.
Pepperell missed and from a chance to square the match he found himself two down.
At the 13th Fotheringham got up and down from a greenside bunker to go further ahead and Pepperell's fate was sealed when he three-putted the vast green at the short 14th to go four behind and one hole later lost the match by 4 and 3.
In difficult, breezy conditions Cuartero had a remarkable run, playing the 11 closing holes this morning and the first seven this afternoon without dropping a shot. In his semi-final he was never headed by Cristiano Terragni of Italy, pulling away to a lead of four holes at the 12th.
But the Italian made a spirited comeback, winning two of the next four holes before being beaten 3 and 1 when Cuartero birdied the long 17th.
Fotheringham, a self-confessed non-academic, moved into full-time amateur golf on a sunny day last year when he walked out of a class studying Romeo and Juliet at Nairn Academy. "What on earth am I doing here?" he asked himself, and set off for the golf course.
Since then he has spent seven months on Australia's Gold Coast, where his sister lives, and has been working hard at his game, being rewarded with a place in the Scottish team for last week's home internationals.
Fotheringham arrived at Porthcawl with few expectations other than a keen desire to get past the second round. Now he has his sights set on the title "to show mum and dad that all the money they have spent on me has been worthwhile".
