NAIRN JUNIOR MEMBER FOTHERINGHAM THROUGH
TO SEMI-FINALS OF BRITISH BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM R&A WEBSITE
The semi-finals of the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl will feature a home nations contest between Eddie Pepperell of England and new Scots cap Fraser Fotheringham, and an all-Continental encounter with Emilio Cuarto of Spain facing Christiano Terragni of Italy.
Pepperell, the bronze medal winner in this year's European Young Masters, lost the first hole of his quarter-final against his England team captain and room-mate Jack Hiluta, but was two up after seven holes.
Hiluta brought the match back to square by the turn before Pepperell made a winning thrust with birdies at the 12th and 13th. Although he lost the 16th he held on to win by one hole.
"The course is beginning to grow on me," he said after admitting earlier in the week that he was not overly impressed with Royal Porthcawl.
Fotheringham, his opponent this afternoon, made his debut for Scotland in last week's home internationals, but the Nairn Golf Club junior member played like a seasoned veteran to beat experienced Danish international Nicolai Aagaard by 3 and 2.
Aagaard has been named in the Continent of Europe team to play Great Britain & Ireland in the Jacques Leglise Trophy later this month and he is renowned for his big-hitting exploits.
"I did manage to outdrive him once," said Fotheringham. But the Scot relied on other skills for his victory, winning the first with a birdie and chipping in at the second for another to go two up. He lost the short fourth to a two, but birdied the seventh and eighth to take a firm grip on the game.
In an all-Spanish match Jordi Garcia Pinto quickly went two up on Emilio Cuartero but the match was all square by the 12th and Cuartero won the 14th and 17th for a 2 and 1 victory.
England's third player in the quarter-finals, Gary King, took an early one-hole lead over Cristiano Terragni of Italy, but was soon pinned back and found himself two down with five to play. He won the 15th and had a chance to take the match into extra time until Terragni holed from 12 feet for a half on the final green to secure a one hole win.
