WHITEKIRK GOLF CLUB PAIR EARN
TRIP TO BAHRAIN NEXT YEAR
Whitekirk Golf Club professional Paul Wardell and his club captain Guido Bicocchi, who plays off six, won themselves a trip to the exclusive Riffa Golf Club & Resort, Bahrain next May with an eight-under-par, better-ball score of 64 over Crail Golfing Society’s Craighead links today.
They were playing in one of nine Gulf Air International Pro-Captain Challenge qualifying competitions nationwide.
Paul and Guido, who received five shots, were out in a net 33 (four under par) and back in net 31 (also four under par).
Whitekirk Golf Club is near North Berwick.
Paul received £450 for being the winning professional and he is guaranteed at least another £350 as he and Guido represent the PGA Scottish Region in the Pro-Captain Challenge final.
Only the winning pair at each qualifier make the trip to Bahrain.
Alan E Reid (West Lothian) and his club captain, Derek Pickens, a four-handicapper, finished runners-up at Crail with a net 65 (33-32). Reid earned £300.
The last of the 22 pairs to finish, Carluke Golf Club's pro Craig Ronald and captgain Alan Donohoe (handicap 14) came third with a net 67 (34-33). Craig earned £225.
Craig Everett (Caldwell), the winning pro at the qualifying competition for the past two years, failed to make it three in a row. Playing with club captain John Devanny (handicap 6), they had a net 76 and finished down the field.
