Allied Surveyors Scottish men's amateur championship

JAMES BYRNE MAKES EARLY EXIT
IN EXTRA HOLES AT PRESTWICK

James Byrne, the new Scottish Under-18 b oys' stroke-play champion, was the first seed to make a exit from the Allied Surveyors Scottish men's amateur championship at Prestwick Golf Club.
James, pictured right, who won the boys' title on a play-off at Cardrona last Thursday, went into extra holes again, this time losing at the 20th to Allan Johnson (Bonnyton), who is home for the summer holidays from Grand Canyon University, Arizona.
Byrne, of course, leaves next month to enrol at Arizona State University.
James, who felt that his lack of knowledge of what is generally regarded as an excellent links with some quirky holes (ideal for match-play) proved to be his undoing, was two down at the turn.
He did manage to square the contest before the 18th but lost at the second extra hole.
Youth cap Philip McLean (Peterhead) also went out on the opening day. He lost on the 18th green to Stephen Neilson (Dunbar).
Bryan Fotheringham (Forres), hoping to regain his place in the Scotland team for the home internationals, suffered a blow when he lost by two holes to Steven Hume (Murrayshall).
Ross Kellett (Colville Park), quarter-finalist in the "British" a few weeks back, was beaten 3 and 2 by Ross Dixon (Kilmarnock Barassie).
Top seed Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw), playing in his final domestic tournament before he turns professional after the Walker Cup, progressed without much trouble.
The eight seeds are: 1 Lloyd Saltman, 2 Richie Ramsay (scratched), 3 Kevin McAlpine, 4 Keir McNicoll, 5 James Byrne, 6 Jonathan King, 7 Callum Macaulay, 8 Scott Henry.
