Byrne and Stewart pull Scots through in Euro boys' event

SCOTLAND FINISH CREDITABLE FIFTH AS
DENMARK BEAT ENGLAND IN FINAL

Denmark, playing on home turf, beat England to win the gold medals and Scotland beat defending champions Norway 3-2 to finish a creditable fifth in the European boys' team championship at Rold Skov Golf Club, Denmark today.
Ireland finished 10th after losing 3 1/2-1 1/2 to Germany in Flight 2 and in the same flight Wales beat Austria 3-2 to achieve 11th place in the final rankings.
Scotland and Norway met in last year's final when Norway won to take the title. The competitive edge was just as keen when they met again with fifth place at stake.
Neil Henderson and Andrew Campbell scored a crucial one-hole win for Scotland in the only foursomes tie.
That gave the Scots an edge going into the four singles. They needed it because Paul Shields lost the first tie. But James Byrne and Michael Stewart, the reliable "Old Firm" for Scotland, turned the match around. James won by 3 and 2 and Michael by 2 holes.
Although Sam McLaren lost the last single, the Scots had achieved the winning figure of 3pt.
