CLACKMANNANSHIRE COUNTY GOLF NEWS

By HUGH HUNTER

It was a golden week for two top Wee County golfers, with successful campaigns by Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) and Scott Borrowman (Dollar).
The trail started on Monday, June 18 when both were in action trying to gain a place in the top 64 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the Amateur Championship at the Royal Lytham Golf Course, venue of many Open championships.
Callum qualified easily with a ten under par score while Scott’s six-over missed the cut by eight shots. Callum went on to gain a bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals of the Amateur while Scott bounced back a few days later to take his second dational title, the Scottish Youths title at Erskine.
These two outstanding results put Clackmannan into the forefront of Scottish Golf at present, and hopefully there will be more to come. Both golfers must be feeling confident for upcoming events, especially the Scottish Amateur Championship at Prestwick at the end of July.

MORE MACAULAY MAGIC

After finishing his course successfully at the University of Mississippi, Callum returned home to play the elite golf events, and has performed pretty well. In his first qualifying round at St Anne’s Old course, he showed immediately that he meant business with a six-under-par 66 score, containing eight birdies and two bogeys.
His second round over the tougher and longer Lytham course continued the fine form. Callum raced to the turn in two under par 33. Four further birdies followed and the round was only spoiled by a double bogey at the short 12lfth where he encountered bunker trouble.
The end result was a 67 and a 10 under aggregate, leaving him in second equal qualifying position. Nine Scots beat the qualifying score for the 64 match-play spots, with Callum playing the local star Sam Stuart (with a substantial number of spectators).
In a close match, Callum came through with a good five foot putt at the nineteenth hole. His next match was a bit easier -- a similar outward nine score as the previous day gave him a commanding six hole lead against Rhys Enoch (Truro), and despite a couple of lapses, a 20 ft putt sealed the match on the 15th green.
The next game really tested Callum, both in the golfing sense but also patience. Against an excruciatingly slow French player Kenny Le Sager ( he took about 80 to 100 seconds to play his shots), Callum (incidentally taking 35 seconds per shot) fought back from a two-hole deficit to take the match at the 20th when the Frenchman found sand from the tee at the par 4 hole.
Now in the quarter finals, the match against fellow Scot Ross Kellett (Colville Park) went Callum’s way by 4 and 3, and although the golf was below the standard of his previous matches, it was enough to take him to the semi-finals and a tie against Aussie champion Tim Stewart.
In another tight match, Callum was a hole up at the twelfth, but a missed putt and a bunker visit at the last hole allowed Tim to reach the final, leaving the Tulliallan player with the bronze medal.
Naturally, Callum was disappointed, but nevertheless, it was a great performance (he did finish top Scot) proving that he has the game to take on the best amateurs, and “Team Macaulay” with dad Harry on the bag drew much favourable comment from the spectators who appreciated the golf shots and Callum’s confident manner.
Well done to Callum - best performance ever from a wee County golfer in the Amateur!!

ANOTHER SUPER SCOTT

With rounds of 76 and 73 in the Amateur qualifying, and missing the cut, Scott Borrowman (Dollar), Stirling University student, must have felt a bit down, but perhaps inspired by Callum’s progress, he bounced back at Erskine Golf Club to take the 2007 Scottish Youths title, five years after he captured the Under 16’s trophy at Ratho Park.
Maintaining the lead from the first two days' play, Scott recorded another sub par third round, closing with a one over par in the final round, an aggregate of nine under par, and a two shot win.
However the scores do not tell the real story where Scott lost his lead as others clawed back, and only a birdie, birdie finish by Scott allowed him to snatch the trophy. Another top class performance!!
Final Results 1 Scott Borrowman (Dollar) 68,66,69,72 275 (9 under)
2 Ben Newsome (East Sussex) 70,67,69,71 277 (7 under)

Scott is in Ireland this week, representing Scotland in a Youths International Match at West Waterford Golf Club.
