CLACKMANNAN COUNTY MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
FIRST-ROUND WINNERS AT DOLLAR

By HUGH HUNTER

The 2007 Clackmannan county match-play championship started on Monday evening at Dollar with 16 qualifiers from the spring and summer meetings. Players generally enjoyed the good putting surfaces, and high quality of golf was provided for a good number of spectators.
Title-holder Craig O’Connor (Alloa) emphasised his determination to retain the trophy with a win over local ace Darren Hulston.
Elsewhere there were several nerve-wracking moments when matches went to the closing holes. Young David Milloy (Alloa) won the last two holes to scrape through, as did Alloa golfers Ian Ross and Jamie Aitken.
Former international Steven Horne(Tulliallan) survived a tough match with former Scottish boys' champion John Gullen (Alloa).
Alloa players dominate the quarter-finals, and with these being held over the Schawpark course, a stranglehold on the event is possible.

Results:
First round
D Milloy (Alloa) beat G Lyons (Tulliallan) 1 hole.
J Maxwell (Tulliallan) beat S Moffat (Braehead) 2 holes.
S Horne (Tulliallan) beat J Gullen (Alloa) 2 and 1.
I Ross (Alloa) beat P McLeod (Braehead) 1 hole.

R Benvie (Braehead) beat P Dempsey (Alloa) 3 and 2.
C O’Connor (Alloa) beat D Hulston (Dollar) 6 and 5.

The semi-finals will be played over Braehead on June 11 with the final at Tulliallan on June 14, both starting at 5.15 pm.
