A world-class international field is set to challenge for the €725,000 first prize from a record €4,350,000 prize fund in the 2007 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, Surrey from May 24-27.
Seven of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, representing five different countries, will bid to win a highly prized title on the European Tour International Schedule over the outstanding West Course.
In all, 18 winners from the current season are taking part while 11 of last year’s successful European Ryder Cup team and captain Ian Woosnam have confirmed their participation.
South Africa’s Ernie Els, ranked fifth in the world, heads the OWGR list with Henrik Stenson of Sweden (sixth), Vijay Singh of Fiji (seventh), South Africa’s Retief Goosen (ninth), Luke Donald of England (10th), Padraig Harrington of Ireland (11th) and England’s Paul Casey (13th).
Also in attendance will be last year’s Ryder Cup winners, Casey, Darren Clarke, Donald, Harrington, David Howell, Robert Karlsson, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie, José Maria Olazábal, Stenson and Lee Westwood.
Montgomerie, the winner in 1998, 1999 and 2000, will be attempting to claim a record-equalling fourth title while Olazábal is bidding to add to his 1994 success and Woosnam to his two wins in 1988 and 1997.
David Howell, who played in Europe’s last two Ryder Cup victories, defends the title he won by five shots from fellow countryman, Simon Kahn, 12 months ago.
