RUNNING TO WIN LYTHAM

TROPHY BY THREE SHOTS

Walker Cup man Lloyd Saltman, still only 21, added another great victory to an already impressive amateur golfing CV when he won the prestigious Lytham Trophy by three shots at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club today.
Saltman, pictured right, led from start to finish to add this win to his early-season Scottish double triumph in the Champion of Champions at Leven and then the Craigmillar Park Open in Edinburgh.
Lloyd put together rounds of 65, 67, 74 and 73 for a total of 279 against a CSS of 74, 75, 75 and 77. That he could not break 70 over this tough Open championship course in today’s gale-force winds were to be expected but he held his game together to finish three strokes ahead of Welsh Walker Cup veteran Nigel Edwards and the brilliant teenager Rory McIlroy from Holywood, Belfast.
The next best Scot after Saltman was Scott Henry (Cardross) in 16th position on 293. He was followed by Banchory teenager James Byrne who slipped back to a share of 19th position on 295 with Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen).
